How many Texas state holidays are there? ›

State holidays: Many employers in Texas offer their employees paid time off for certain holidays, such as New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

State employees working the day before or the day after an optional holiday, or on both workdays, are entitled to exchange a national or state holiday that does not occur on a Saturday or Sunday, for an optional holiday. Optional holidays are only the days on which Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or Good Friday falls.

States and the District of Columbia may recognize their own holidays, such as Emancipation Day or Indigenous Peoples Day. These holidays recognize events and people important to a state's history and culture.

Most state laws, including those of Texas, do not require employers to observe any holidays or to pay employees if time off for holidays is granted.
